What I've Been Eating Mashup #1

Print Friendly and PDFPrint Friendly

Dad's BBQ - a slightly secret recipe, but I can tell you that 7-Up was used in the marinade! :o) Now that I realize it. I don't have a BBQ recipe on this blog! Must get on that!

Here are some other great recipes to bring to a BBQ/Cookout!:

My sister recently turned me on to raw oats (rolled, whole wheat, bran) As much as I love cooked oatmeal, I have to say I'm ADDICTED to raw oats. I eat it like a cereal with some milk and fruits. I sometimes add honey and sugar if I want some sweetness.

Obviously if you're watching what you eat, then replace the milk with a non-dairy one and omit the sugar/honey.  I'm not too focused on my sugar intake and I can never let go of my 2% milk *hangs head* :p

Check out more oaty goodness:

Costco Sushi. Nom!

Check out some of these other Asian inspired recipes!:

Pesto Chicken Pasta. Need I say more? :o) I used regular peanuts this time and it was delightful! I love making pesto and experimenting with different nuts. I've since tried this with hazelnuts and spanish nuts (which I still have yet to post up!).

Check out the recipe as well as my other pasta/pesto posts:

More like Edy's Rich & Creamy Grand Ice Cream in Sex In Your Mouth. This stuff is sooo good!!! I was good though and only had this 2830989204 times this week :p Don't worry, I ran most of it off (and almost killed myself bahaha!)

Most of these photos are from my instagram: @GoFeatYourself

If you have instagram, leave your username in the comments and I'll be sure to check them out! :o)

Tea Time w/ Mogi! - Stop Motion Animation

Print Friendly and PDFPrint Friendly

For my first video, I really wanted to experiment with this neat technique of stop motion where you use photos frame by frame to manipulate an object creating the illusion that it's moving on its own. For my first stab at it, I knew I needed a star and Mogi was just perfect haha. He was given to me by my cousin a few years ago and I'm so happy to be able to share him with the world.

Hope you enjoy the video!!

Apple Crisp & "La Fway" :D

Print Friendly and PDFPrint Friendly
 Apple Crisp Moments
a haiku by Andrea V

Crunchy, sweet topping...
Autumn's cure for Winter blues
I'll save you a piece.

Let's be honest, any type of dessert/snack right out of the oven is muy perfecto during these cold winter months. Apple crisp, just happens to be a personal favorite. Speaking of cold months, it seems the snow has been actively trying to avoid the Chicago area, but like a lost puppy or kitten, eventually finds its way back home at least for little bits at a time. I'm not complaining. As much as I LOVE the snow, I have to say, it's quite a nice change of pace actually being able to enjoy it instead of trying to survive it :)

The Apple Crisp (or any crisp) really is the ultimate idealist's dessert, in that it tastes like a sinful act of gluttony, but feels like a light sweet harmless snack and with more or less only about 200 calories per serving, I'd say the latter rings most true :)

I make my apple crisp with a thicker oat topping. If you want this even more healthy, then just lessen the topping.

Apple Crisp

Ingredients
  • 2 or 3 medium sized Granny Smith apples sliced
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1/2 stick butter or margarine chilled and cubed
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • juice of one lemon
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch
Cooking Directions
  1. In a sauce pan over medium-high heat, start to cook apples, 3 tablespoons of brown sugar, lemon juice, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and corn starch. Stir until sauce starts to thicken. Pour into baking dish. Set aside.
  2. For topping: Whisk together flour, oats, baking powder, rest of brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and add a pinch of salt. Cut in cubed butter (using fork or fingers). Make sure butter is well incorporated in the dry mixture.
  3. Using a tablespoon at a time, add hot water while mixing until doughy paste is formed.
  4. Place dollops of the dough over the apples. Make sure apples are evenly topped.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 45 minutes or until apples are bubbly and topping is a nice golden brown.

^_^

For the sake of being random, I present to you, "La Fway"

hahahahahahaha, thank you inter-webs for this majestic piece of art.

New Hair, Cookie Monster, & Some Blackhawks Lovin'

Print Friendly and PDFPrint Friendly

New Hair. Wee new haircut!! Sometimes I get a little scissor happy when I really want to do a certain style. I haven't had a blunt bangs since I was really young (like 10 years old haha), so I thought I'd bring it back for the New Year!

Blackhawks Lovin'. Anyways, it's been a few weeks or so since the NHL lockout ended and by golly, I've never been so happy.

So far we're the only undefeated team in the league at 6-0.  Woop Woop!

Cookie Monster. Although I'm quite happy with my own Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, I like trying other people's versions every now and then. Unless you burn them or something you can't really go wrong. A lot of people have their favorite recipe or their own version that no matter how similar the ingredients are, just taste different in some way.

I recently came across this scrumptious looking cookie video on the interwebs and decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, mine didn't turn out nearly as rustically chewy and amazing as his looked, which I'm not sure why. I did swap out shortening for butter, which I don't normally do..................hmm, okay so that clears things up lol.

Butter vs. Shortening. I normally swear by butter, but I've heard other people say the same about shortening. I will say though, I'm in love with the texture that shortening brings, which is chewier and fluffy. HOWEVER, I'm still missing that overall butter flavor and I quite like the golden brown affect it gives the cookies. As you can see, using shortening creates a more pale, but still slightly golden cookie.

Overall, I like this version and will make it again in the future!

Hope you're all having a lovely day!

Confessions of an Admitted TV Junkie: '12 Fall TV Recs

Print Friendly and PDFPrint Friendly

So I've been checking out some new television shows and I've come across some I really like and highly recommend.

Aarow - Wednesdays 9/8C on CW

I'll start with my absolute favorite.

With The Avengers leading the way there seems to be a resurgence happening in the movie world proving that this genre is in fact an exceptionally legitimate and marketable concept. For so long, I feel that critics have only held these types of films as low quality art. But regardless of one's opinion, it's undeniable that the appeal of superheroes in our culture today can and has positively effected not only the entertainment industry, but our society as a whole. Superheroes (and villains!) and the stories they tell remind us of humanity's limitless potential as well as breaking point in a way that we all can understand.

"Superheroes are colorful incarnations of the human soul" -Alex Wilgus

With that being said, now that Smallville is over, there's been a gap in the market for this genre in television.

I personally am not a connoisseur of the comic book so I had never really heard of Green Aarow, but as I mentioned I feel that one only needs to be human to enjoy them. Bottom line,  Aarow is shaping up to be an incredible show with an incredible leading male *swoons*, awesome writing, and I predict it will be around for a while! (I hope!)

The Walking Dead Sundays @10/9C on AMC

I remember watching bits here and there early in the first season, but never enough to get immersed in the story. Thanks to Netflix, my mom (who is also a fellow TV Junkie ^_^) was able to complete the whole first two seasons. Her excitement for The Walking Dead reawakened any ounce I had dormant enough to go ahead and tune in to the premiere of the third season. And because I'd missed so much, I didn't really expect more than to be entertained by hissing zombies and a lot of gore.

Needless to say, I was immediately drawn in. The great thing about this show that I wish I had known earlier on is that it's not so much scattered with overlapping plot-lines, but instead more focused on the characters and their dilemmas as individuals and a group, so it was easier for me to understand what was going on (and my mom helped filling me in too).

So, If you happen to have Netflix and a strange fascination with the undead like I do, definitely check out The Walking Dead if you can.  It's definitely worth it! :)

 Revolution - Mondays @ 10/9C on NBC

As we live in a society where we depend so much on electricity, the thought of the whole world in which that is taken away is an intriguing concept in it of itself.

Revolution started off a bit slow, but has since gotten better and better each week.

666 Park Avenue Sundays 10/9C on ABC

I mean the title is pretty much self-explanatory.

This show is dark and creepy, but also very seductive. I love the mystery surrounding the Drake and what its doing to the residents. My only criticism is that the lead female character, Jane epitomizes and commits everything I rant and yell at these characters NOT do in horror films. With that being said, she does go through some creepy, scary, unfortunate stuff that you can't help but feel bad and root for her.

I'm worried this show will get the ax. I'll keep watching though!

Last Resort Thursdays @8/7C on ABC

This show has so much promise.

In contrast to The Walking Dead, Last Resort is VERY plot driven. The first episode just hits you with a plot that's pretty huge and with characters that have their own little thing going on, so overall there's so many possibilities that this show can branch off into and so far, the writers and creators are doing a great job with the way its all unfolding. The acting in this is amazing as well and each episode is a cinematic experience.

I love this show, but I fear that with the way they've scheduled in so many long breaks within the first season that it may not garner enough ratings to be renewed.

And the the Honorable Mention goes to....

Beauty and the Beast Thursdays @9/8C on CW

Kristin Kruek physically is perfect for the role as "Beauty". But as Catharine, a tough cookie/butt kicking detective who happens to also be pretty, it's just not believable. Also speaking of not believable, I've never seen Beast look so sexy!

This show might as well be called Beauty and the Sexy Damaged Guy.

With an open mind and putting all that aside, this show is actually not that bad. If I'm willing to suspend disbelief for shows like Vampire Diaries, The Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time, Grimm, etc. then Beauty and the Beast shouldn't be an exception. Even though it started off a bit slow, it's definitely getting better.

Not sure if it will be back, BUT I think it's worth following at least so far.

What new shows are you enjoying?
^_^

STROOPIE-fied & a Blog Award! :)

Print Friendly and PDFPrint Friendly
 STROOPIE-fied

I, unfortunately, didn't get to truly taste much of authentic Dutch cuisine while in Holland, MICHIGAN but I did come across some amazing Dutch pastry snacks. My favorite definitely had to be the Stroopies.

A Stroopwafel is basically two thin waffles glued together by a mixture of Dutch syrup, butter, brown sugar, and some cinnamon. I've always been a pancake person, but this is just TOOOO GOOD. The actual waffles are made with a stiff batter which gives them a more crispy texture than traditional "American" waffles and together with the gooey syrupy center is just.......*mouth waters*.

"The history of the Stroopwafel goes back until 1784. A baker from Gouda baked a waffle of old crumbs and spices and filled this waffle with syrup. The Stroopwafel was born. In fact the Stroopwafel was a rest product. And therefor a popular pastry among the poor. " -StroopwafelShop.com

The packaged snack version we inhaled purchased was super delicious. Apparently you can get them in some Starbucks (horribly overpriced of course. No thanks!)  I can only imagine how good they taste from scratch......hmmmm.

Can I just say, that the season finale of Glee was pure epic GENIUS!

GLEE has become one of my FAVORITE shows ever! It never fails to bring me to tears. I truly believe that if we all can live by what a show like Glee has proven just by how much success it's received and will continue to receive despite the skepticism, all of us....the majority of us can find it easier to smile with affirmation that the world is a much better place than before we all caught a glimpse of ourselves through the characters of this show. Get inspired...GLEEK STYLE!! :)

With that, I bid the fall season farewell...

&

 HELLO to the SUMMER lineup!
Here are just a few of the shows I'm looking forward to:

Cupcake Wars Season premiere Tuesday 10/9c on FoodNetwork
FoodNetwork pretty much had me with the title of this new show.

Lie To Me - Monday nights 8/7c on FOX
The concept of this show is so interesting to me--thrilling and full of suspense!

So You Think You Can Dance - Weds 8/7c & Thurs 9/8c on FOX
"Dance Idol" as we like to refer to this show around the house. It's basically American Idol, but on the dancefloor! :)

Drop Dead Diva - Sunday nights 10/9c on Lifetime
I LOVE THIS SHOW!! It's not a show that I can relate to per say, but it does teach me a lot and takes me on a rollercoaster of emotions--laughter, tears, hope, inspiration, whatever ya need haha :)

The Road

Print Friendly and PDFPrint Friendly

Funny story...So, every time my mom passed by a video store or a redbox, she'd always mention this one movie in particular that she's been wanting to see for a while now. When I asked her what it's about, she explained to me, "It's a horror film with Liam Leeson, the guy from Taken!!". I love horror movies and I've always been a fan of Liam Neeson's work, needless to say, I became very interested in seeing the film myself.

The movie she was referring to is called The Road starring Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, and Guy Pearce based on the novel by Cormack McCarthy. Even though the movie was not in fact a horror film nor did it star Liam Neeson (haha my mom couldn't have been more wrong), I enjoyed the film nevertheless and would recommend it to anyone. It's a beautiful, albeit depressing, and touching story about a father and son struggling in a post-apocalyptic world. It's pretty heavy, but will make you think about the world we live in today and how we've been treating Her. Also with all our hardships and struggles, it remind us to always be thankful for what we do have and to always treasure the ones we love and the time we're allotted to be with them because one day, they won't be there anymore and neither will we....depressing, but true.

peace&love
